Increase Your Response Rate

A higher response rate leads to more useful feedback.

Consider the following ideas to increase your Student Course Feedback response rate.

Discuss Course Feedback with Your Students

You should discuss course feedback with your students: why is course feedback important to you and the university? What do you do with the feedback from your students? Let your students know you care about their experience and you want to hear from them. Tell the students when the survey is available and how to login. You can also direct students to our resources for students.

Create a Reflection Assignment

Incorporate a graded or ungraded course reflection assignment at the end of your course. In the assignment, ask students to write a brief reflection statement and then submit their course feedback at https://scf.utah.edu. You cannot grade the students on completing the survey, because it’s anonymous, but instructors who have done this see increased response rates because they direct students to the survey as part of an assignment.

Offer Class Time

When appropriate, you can offer class time at the end of the semester to allow students to complete the course feedback survey in class. This is a great time to discuss course feedback with your students! Distribute or post the login link (https://scf.utah.edu) and step out of the classroom for 15 minutes at the beginning of a class period. Students may leave early if you offer time at the end of a session. If students have issues submitting feedback, please ask them to contact our office at scf@ctle.utah.edu so we can help.

Mid-semester Student Feedback

Collecting mid-semester student feedback is an opportunity to show students what you do with their feedback. Starting Spring 2022, you will receive an email inviting you to Opt-in to mid-semester feedback. Visit our Mid-semester Student Feedback Resource for more information.

Add Course Feedback to Your Syllabus

Add Student Course Feedback information to your syllabus. Include the login information (https://scf.utah.edu) and the survey start and end date.

Surveys for regular, full-semester classes, open one week before the last day of class and close on the Saturday after Final Exam week. You can check these dates in advance on the Academic Calendar.

Here is a sample statement you can use or edit:

Student Course Feedback

Your course feedback matters! I use your feedback to confirm what works well in my classes or find areas for improvement. The University uses your feedback as part of faculty reviews. And other students can use your feedback to help decide between classes or instructors. A survey will be available starting the week before our class ends and will remain available through finals week. You should log in to submit your feedback at https://scf.utah.edu.
